Travel back through time and learn about Thomas Automotive's history below. The automotive industry certain has changed over the years, but at Thomas, dedication to customer service first and foremost has never wavered.Â
First Generation:
-1888- Back before the turn of the century, C.J. Thomas opened his blacksmith shop in Carrolltown, PA. He decided that he'd put one thing first in his business--service! A family tradition was started that would wind up spanning across the next 3 generations.Â
-1909- C.J. Thomas opened a Ford Dealership in Carrolltown, PA.Â
-1919- The Ford Dealership changed over to a Chevrolet Dealership.Â
Second Generation:Â
-1939- The Pennsylvania super highway, now know as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, between Carlisle and Pittsburgh was due to open in 1940. K.A. Thomas moved to Bedford, PA and purchased the Augustine Chevrolet Dealership. Operating with 5 employees, K.A. Thomas emphasized service to local customers and turnpike travelers. The cost of a new 1939 Chevrolet was $750.
-1940- The Oldsmobile franchise was added. The cost of a new 1940 Oldsmobile was $777.Â
-1941- Due to the war effort, no cars were being built. K.A. Thomas focused on selling and servicing used cars and trucks. Case Farm Machinery was also added and sold after the war.Â
-1946- The Cadillac franchise was added.Â
Third Generation:Â
-1964- W.K. Thomas takes over the business and becomes dealer.Â
-1965- The business is moved to its present location in Bedford, PA for room to expand on 13 acres providing a larger selection of vehicles, larger showroom, body shop, and larger servicing facilities.Â
Fourth Generation:
-1983- Mark Thomas becomes dealer. He started working at the dealership in 1977.
-1985- Mark Thomas adds a new car wash facility and down-draft paint facility providing a cleaner and safer operation, which was one of only a few along the East Coast at the time.
-1988- The showroom was expanded for the Subaru line.Â
-1989- The Geo Import line from Chevrolet was added. Â
-1995- Mark Thomas adds the Buick GMC Dealership in Johnstown, PA to Thomas Automotive.Â
-1997- A state-of-the-art auto body and collision center was added at the Johnstown, PA location.Â
-2000- Cumberland Valley Motor, a Subaru dealer, was purchased.Â
-2003- The Hyundai franchise was added at the Cumberland, MD location. Also that same year, Alvin's Honda in Winder, PA was purchased with it's name changing to Thomas Team Honda and relocating to Johnstown, PA.Â
-2014- Construction completed at the new Buick GMC Dealership in Johnstown, PA.
-2019- Construction completed at the new Subaru Hyundai Dealership in Cumberland, MD.Â
